QVCA Board Meeting Sept 30 at 7pm  Irmo Library

The following Email was sent or communicated to those running for School Board:

Dear candidates for District 5 School Board: (except Beth Burn whose email I cannot find and will telephone)

Before the constituents of Quail Valley and Harbison, and related communities vote this year, I would like to ask a couple of questions of all of you.

  1. As a member of the task force that studied for 9 months and visited various schools here in SC and NC, with established magnet programs, I would like to know if you agree with what the district officials and the board has done with the Gifted and Talented program at HWES. We voted on and unanimously recommended to Dr. Andersen who had put into the Board Briefs that the ‘09/’10 school year would be the year that HWES would go from a pilot program of 2nd graders to a full program up and including 5th grade. The board changed our voted on recommendation and board brief presentation from next year to “subsequent years”. This means that instead of having a full blown program of hopefully 2nd through 5th grade, with 2 classes for each grade. They now have changed that to just one grade a year for the next 3 years. We want our studied and voted upon recommendation to stand and have all grades implemented next year. .It is good for the school, good for all the students, good for th e parents of those students already there and good for those parents of gifted children who would like an all day program for their talented kids. This is what our communities were expecting…and more importantly still do.
  2. Latest quotes from Dr. Berg. the temporary superintendent, were that he mentioned closing an “elementary school with falling attendance”, we assume he means HWES even though he won’t say so. They, the board, were told that district offices could go there, the ALTERNATIVE ACADEMY, moved there, and storage space….We in the community spent a lot of time trying to improve the situation at HWES, not make it worse for our communities and our home values by shutting down the school and replacing it with his suggestions.  We need to know before we vote in November if you would also do the same to HWES, even though we spent all this time and effort to get it “turned around”, along with the great job the principal, vice principal and teachers did last year with the reading scores improvements. So simply put would you support that suggesti on of his about the school and using it for offices, storage and more importantly, the ALTERNATIVE ACADEMY.

 Respectfully yours:

 V. Bruce Innocenti

 Magnet School

Task Force Member

                           These are the responses:

Bruce thank you for caring and being inlvolved. I am a supporter of what your committee recommended and have been trying to get magnet schools in this end of the district since I served as SIC chair at Irmo high School. Please know that I do not want to see any neighborhood school closed and would support innovative ideas that revitilize our older communities while supporting needed new schools. We have to prioritize . As a current classroom teacher my focus will be cirriculum and classroom programs. I want to empower teachers. Only they really know the needs of our students. The 9 months your group spent on this issue should count. As I told you on the phone, I felt this study should have been done way befor it was an some of us board members had made suggestions earlier about the k-3rd grade aschool and pull students from all the distrct area.
Thanks for your interest and your grassroots involvment. Only with efforts like yours and others can we make needed changes. Honestly I am quite astonished that  a temporary superintendent would make major changes when he is her for such a short time and can not fully understand our specific community in such a short time.
Look forward to meeting you,
Jan Hammond
